you are a child of the universe

If it was later in the season I'd say it was "muggy" out, but I can't bring myself to say that just yet because it's only June 13. I am sipping a martini, which tastes good but really, really strong, even though it's mostly ice. It's late in the afternoon and in about a half-hour I'm going to go out and walk three miles with some friends of mine. I don't suppose vodka and vermouth are the best things to drink in preparation for physical exercise, are they?

Today at lunch I walked to Nooshi Sushi and got a dragon roll and on the spur of the moment a box of fortune cookies (six). Once I started eating them I couldn't bring myself to stop and finished the box. These were my fortunes, though I use the term loosely:

1. You will sleep well at night.
2. Your life will be happy and peaceful.
3. Your talents will be recognized and suitably rewarded.
4. Your family is young, gifted and attractive.
5. You and your wife will be happy in your life together.
6. Pray for what you want, but work for what you need.

Uh huh.

Number six is a cheat.
Number 5 ... well, automatically discounted.
Number 4 made me laugh out loud.
Number 3 ... hello, I'm an editor--everybody hates me, is that my reward?
Number 2 is my dearest wish, consciously. My unconscious must have other ideas.
Number 1 ... the least interesting, but true. I sleep well at night. Except for Bob meowing at me and biting my face, and Herself getting into bed with me in the middle of the night, and the sheets wrapping themselves around me and making me sweaty, and the birds starting to sing at three-thirty a.m.

even if I'm just dancing in the dark

It's a beautiful, sunny, breezy, late spring Saturday morning and the windows are open and the door to the deck as well, and the cats are running back and forth chasing something--a fly or a bee, I guess--around the livingroom. They run to the front door and stop and their heads move in unison, watching the flight pattern of their prey. Spike leaps straight up, paws out, and brings it down. What a pro. He picks up whatever it is in his mouth and carries it off; I expect I'll find unattached wings or legs later on today.

My friend C. is moving into her new home this weekend. Actually I know a lot of people who have bought houses or who are looking to buy houses, or land, or who are redecorating or renovating the homes they live in. At the Girl Scout picnic on Tuesday I overheard a conversation about knocking down a livingroom wall. It's spring and people want something different. Knowing so many people in transit makes me restless. I think about painting and changing rooms around, I think about a new house, I think about a new job. My sister and my brother-in-law ask me when I'm moving back to Connecticut.

Lately every morning I wake up angry. Anger gets me out of bed in the morning, and then after my dose of Cymbalta it simmers down and translates into a general feeling of agitation, which translates as the day goes on into something else I can't name yet. I feel like my life has been in stasis for a long time, well before The Husband moved out, and now even the most reluctant part of me wants action. DO something, do something, do something. Just do it. But what is it?
